About this tool

The calculator adds up the area of every room, applies your waste allowance and divides by the coverage per box, rounding up — you can't buy part of a box. Waste allows for cutting boards to length, working around doorframes and matching patterns: 5–10% is common for a straight lay, and 15% or more for diagonal or herringbone patterns.

Example: a 12 × 10 ft room plus an 8 × 10 ft room is 200 sq ft. With 10% waste you need 220 sq ft, which is 11 boxes at 20 sq ft per box.

Measure at the longest and widest points, and include closets and any areas under appliances you plan to floor. For odd-shaped rooms, split them into rectangles and add each one. The result is an estimate — underlay, trims and transition strips are bought separately.
