About this tool
Whether you're writing a tweet, an essay, an SEO meta description or a script, knowing your word and character count helps you stay within limits and estimate how long a piece will take to read.
A word is any run of characters between spaces or line breaks, so "well-known", "don't" and "2026" each count as one word. Sentences are counted at each full stop, question mark or exclamation mark followed by a space, and every non-empty line counts as a paragraph. Characters are counted as you see them, so an emoji or accented letter counts as one.
All counting happens instantly in your browser as you type. Nothing you write is stored or sent anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Word processors use slightly different rules — for example for hyphenated words, dashes with spaces around them, footnotes or text in tables — so totals can differ by a few words on a long document. Sentence counts can also differ around abbreviations such as "e.g.", which this tool treats as the end of a sentence. If a teacher or publisher sets a limit, check which tool they use to count.
