Gravel Calculator
Estimate how much gravel, crushed stone or sand to order for a driveway, path or base. Get the volume, and an estimated weight using a density you can change.
2–4 in for paths and driveways
Ask your supplier for the exact figure.
Often 5–10% for compacted bases.
Volume = length × width × depth. Weight = volume × density. Gravel density varies with stone type, size and moisture — roughly 1.2 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard — so the presets are typical values, not exact ones. Suppliers sell by the cubic yard, the cubic metre or the ton.

How to use gravel calculator
- 1Choose US or metric units.
- 2Enter the length and width of the area and the depth of gravel you want.
- 3Pick a material for a typical density, or type your supplier's density.
- 4Optionally add an allowance for compaction, then read the volume and weight.
About this tool
Volume is length × width × depth. Suppliers sell gravel by the cubic yard, the cubic metre or by weight (tons or tonnes), so the calculator shows all three. To convert volume to weight it multiplies by density — and density varies: loose dry gravel is often around 1.4 US tons per cubic yard, but different stone types, sizes and moisture levels can range from roughly 1.2 to 1.7.
Example: a 20 × 10 ft path, 3 inches deep, needs 50 cubic feet — about 1.85 cubic yards. At 1.4 tons per cubic yard that's roughly 2.6 US tons (2.35 tonnes).
Gravel settles and compacts, so add 5–10% when building a compacted base. Typical depths are 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) for paths and decorative areas and more for driveways with a sub-base. Always confirm the density and coverage with your supplier — the weight here is an estimate, not a delivery figure.
