Distance = steps × step length. Your step length is estimated as about 41.4% of your height (41.5% for men, 41.3% for women) — a common rule of thumb, so treat the distance as an estimate. Measuring your own step length is more accurate. Running steps are longer than walking steps. For pace and finish times, try the Pace Calculator.

About this tool

Distance is simply steps × step length. Step length — what pedometers call stride length — is the distance from one heel to the next as you walk, and it's the only thing that changes the answer.

If you don't know yours, the calculator estimates it from height using a common rule of thumb: about 41.5% of height for men and 41.3% for women. For someone 5 ft 7 in (170 cm) that's roughly 70 cm, or about 2,290 steps per mile. Because it's an estimate, the result is labelled as one.

For a more accurate figure, measure it: walk 10 normal steps, measure the distance and divide by 10. Running steps are much longer than walking steps, so use a running step length for runs. For pace and finish times, use the Pace Calculator; for kilometres as the headline figure, use Steps to KM.
