About this tool
Average order value (AOV) is the mean amount spent per order: AOV = total revenue ÷ number of orders. It's one of the core e-commerce metrics, alongside conversion rate and traffic — revenue is simply visitors × conversion rate × AOV.
Example: $5,000 of revenue from 100 orders is an AOV of $50. If those orders came from 2,500 visitors, the conversion rate is 4% and each visitor is worth $2 in revenue on average.
Decide whether your revenue figure includes tax, shipping, discounts and refunds, and keep the rule consistent when comparing months. Averages can hide a lot: a few very large orders raise AOV even if most orders are small, so it's worth looking at the median too. AOV can't be calculated from zero orders.
Frequently asked questions
Divide total revenue by the number of orders. $12,600 from 280 orders is an AOV of $45.
