About this tool
Modern browsers and devices expect several different favicon sizes for different contexts: a small 16px or 32px icon for browser tabs, 180px for the Apple touch icon used when someone adds your site to an iOS home screen, and 192px/512px sizes for Android and web app manifests. This tool generates all of these from a single source image, center-cropped to a square so nothing gets stretched.
It also builds a genuine favicon.ico containing 16×16, 32×32 and 48×48 images in one file — encoded in the classic ICO format, not a renamed PNG — for tools, crawlers and older software that still request /favicon.ico by default. The Apple touch icon is placed on a white background, because iOS shows transparent areas of that icon as black.
Frequently asked questions
Modern browsers handle PNG favicons fine, but many tools, feed readers and crawlers still request /favicon.ico automatically, so including one avoids 404s and missing icons. The generated favicon.ico is a real multi-resolution icon file (16, 32 and 48px), so you can simply put it in your site's root folder.
