About this tool

HEIC is the photo format iPhones use by default since iOS 11. PNG is a much older, universally supported format that uses lossless compression, which is useful when you need to edit a photo further without compounding quality loss, or when a tool specifically requires PNG.

Because PNG doesn't use the aggressive lossy compression JPG does, converted PNG files are typically noticeably larger than the equivalent JPG — often several times the size for a photographic image. If file size matters more than lossless quality, HEIC to JPG is usually the better choice.

This tool uses an open-source WebAssembly build of libheif to decode the HEIC file's pixel data directly in your browser, then re-encodes it as PNG — nothing is uploaded to a server at any point.

Frequently asked questions

HEIC uses efficient lossy compression, while PNG is lossless and stores more data per pixel. This size increase is expected and isn't a sign of an error — it's the trade-off for a format with no compression artifacts.
