How to use image color picker

  1. 1Drag in an image, click to choose one, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl/⌘ + V.
  2. 2Move over the image to preview colors, then click (or tap) to pick one. On a phone you can drag your finger to the right spot before letting go.
  3. 3Copy the HEX, RGB or HSL value with the copy buttons.
  4. 4Use “Sample size” to average a 3 × 3 or 5 × 5 area, which smooths out noise in photos.

About this tool

The image is drawn onto a canvas in your browser and the color is read straight from its pixel data, so the result is the actual color stored in the file. Your click is mapped to the real pixel even when the image is shown smaller than its full size. Keyboard users can focus the image, move a crosshair with the arrow keys (Shift for bigger steps) and press Enter to pick.

Photos and JPG screenshots contain compression noise, so neighbouring pixels can differ slightly even in an area that looks flat. Averaging a small area gives a more representative color for things like a logo, sky or product. The “Main colors” panel groups similar pixels and lists the most common distinct colors — handy for starting a palette from a photo.

Colors are read as stored in the file (sRGB). If the image has an embedded colour profile or your screen is calibrated differently, the displayed color may look slightly different elsewhere. Very large images are scaled to 4,000 pixels on the longest side for picking. The image stays on your device.
