About this tool
JPG is a lossy format designed for small file sizes, which makes it ideal for photos but not for images with sharp edges, text or transparency, since repeated saves gradually degrade quality. PNG uses lossless compression instead, keeping every pixel exactly as it was converted.
Because JPG has no transparency channel, converting to PNG won't add transparency back — the PNG will have the same solid background as the original JPG. Where PNG helps most is for icons, diagrams, screenshots or any image you plan to edit again without further quality loss.
Expect PNG files to generally be larger than the source JPG, especially for photographic images, since PNG doesn't use the same aggressive compression. Each image is redrawn on an in-browser canvas and re-exported, so nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
No. Any quality lost when the original photo was first saved as JPG is already baked into the pixels — converting to PNG simply stores those same pixels losslessly from that point forward, without further loss on this conversion.
