About this tool

Sorting a list alphabetically or by length is a common step before deduplicating, scanning for patterns, or preparing data for import into another tool.

Alphabetical sorting uses standard string comparison. With case-sensitive sorting off (the default), "apple" and "Apple" sort together based on their letters; with it on, capital letters sort before lowercase ones, following their underlying character codes.

Length-based sorting compares the number of characters in each line, which is handy for finding the shortest or longest entries in a list at a glance.

Frequently asked questions

With it off, sorting ignores letter case, so "banana" and "Banana" are treated as equal. With it on, uppercase letters sort before lowercase ones, which can interleave capitalized and lowercase words differently than you might expect.
