VAT Calculator

Add VAT to a net (pre-tax) amount, or remove VAT from a gross (tax-inclusive) amount, at whatever rate applies to you.

VAT rates vary by country and by category of goods or service — there is no single correct rate. Enter whatever rate applies to your situation; the 5% and 20% shortcuts are common UK examples, not universal defaults.

About this tool

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax used across the UK, EU and many other countries, typically shown either as a net price with VAT added, or a gross, tax-inclusive price that VAT needs to be extracted from — for example, working out how much of a receipt total was actually tax.

Rates vary enormously by country and by category of goods or service — some items are taxed at a reduced rate or exempt entirely. This calculator doesn't assume any single rate is correct; enter whatever applies to your situation. The 5% and 20% shortcuts shown are common UK examples (reduced and standard rates), not universal defaults.

Adding VAT multiplies the net amount by the rate. Removing VAT divides the gross amount by (1 + rate) to recover the net figure — a common point of confusion, since simply subtracting the same percentage from the gross amount gives the wrong answer.

Frequently asked questions

Because the VAT percentage applies to the net price, not the gross price. To reverse it correctly you divide the gross amount by (1 + rate) rather than subtracting rate% of the gross amount, which would overstate the VAT removed.
