About this tool
CODE128 accepts virtually any text or numbers, making it the most flexible general-purpose choice. EAN-13 and UPC-A are retail product barcode standards with a strict structure: EAN-13 needs 12 or 13 digits, and UPC-A needs 11 or 12 — in both cases the final digit is a check digit, calculated automatically from the others if you leave it out.
Invalid input for a strict format — the wrong number of digits, or a check digit that doesn't match — is reported clearly rather than silently generating an incorrect barcode that wouldn't scan correctly at a real point of sale.
Frequently asked questions
CODE128 encodes arbitrary text and numbers and is common in logistics and internal tracking. EAN-13 and UPC-A are standardized retail product barcode formats used at point of sale — EAN-13 is used internationally, UPC-A primarily in the US and Canada — and both require digits only, in a specific length.
