Barcode Reader
Decode a barcode from a photo or screenshot. The reader detects the barcode type and number, and finds several barcodes in one image if there are more.
Your files are processed locally in your browser and are not uploaded to our servers.
How to use barcode reader
- 1Drag in an image of a barcode, click to choose one, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl/⌘ + V.
- 2The image is scanned automatically — this takes a moment the first time while the decoder loads.
- 3Read the barcode type and value, and press Copy to copy the number.
- 4If nothing is found, try a sharper, closer and better-lit photo with the whole barcode visible.
About this tool
The reader recognises the common retail and logistics formats — EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, Codabar and ITF (Interleaved 2 of 5) — as well as 2D codes such as QR codes, Data Matrix and PDF417. It tries rotated, inverted and downscaled versions of the image, so barcodes don't have to be perfectly straight.
Example: a product's EAN-13 barcode decodes to its 13-digit number, such as 5901234123457. North American UPC-A codes are shown as their 12-digit number, with a note that adding a leading 0 gives the equivalent EAN-13 — scanners treat them as the same code.
Decoding uses zxing-cpp, an established open-source barcode library, compiled to WebAssembly and served from this site, so the image is processed on your device and never uploaded. It reads uploaded images rather than a live camera feed: take a photo with your phone's camera and choose it here. Damaged, blurry, very small or glare-covered barcodes may not decode.
