About this tool
A Unix timestamp counts the number of seconds (or milliseconds) that have elapsed since January 1, 1970 UTC — the "Unix epoch." It's a compact, timezone-independent way to store a point in time, widely used in APIs, databases and log files.
Because a timestamp itself has no timezone, this tool always shows both a local time (based on your browser's timezone setting) and the equivalent UTC time, so you can see exactly how a given moment reads in either.
When entering a date and time to convert to a timestamp, the value is interpreted in your browser's local timezone, matching what you'd naturally type into the date picker.
Frequently asked questions
The traditional Unix timestamp counts seconds since the epoch. Many JavaScript APIs, including Date.now(), use milliseconds instead — a value 1000 times larger. This tool supports converting either.
