About this tool
A single discount is simple: 20% off $100 is $80. Stacked discounts — like an extra 10% off an already-discounted price — are where mistakes creep in, because two stacked percentages don't simply add together.
This calculator applies the second discount to the already-discounted price, not to the original price, which is how stacked discounts and coupons work in practice. That means 20% off followed by 10% off works out to a 28% effective discount overall, not 30% — the second discount is smaller in absolute terms because it's a percentage of a smaller number.
The "effective discount" figure shown alongside the final price expresses the combined savings as a single percentage of the original price, so you can compare it directly to a plain, non-stacked discount.
Frequently asked questions
Because the second discount applies to the price after the first one, not the original price. $100 minus 20% is $80; $80 minus 10% is $72 — a 28% effective discount, not 30%. Adding percentages together overstates the real savings.
