About this tool

Percentages come up constantly in everyday life, from calculating a discount or tip to understanding a change in price or a statistic in the news. This calculator covers the most common percentage questions in one place.

Each mode uses a standard, well-known formula: for example, percentage change is calculated as ((new value − old value) ÷ old value) × 100. Results update instantly as you type.

Worked examples: 15% of 80 is 0.15 × 80 = 12. 30 out of 120 is 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%. A price rising from 40 to 50 is a (50 − 40) ÷ 40 × 100 = 25% increase, while falling from 50 back to 40 is a 20% decrease — the same 10 difference is a different percentage because it's measured against a different starting value.

Frequently asked questions

Divide the first number by the second, then multiply by 100. The "X is what percentage of Y" mode does this for you automatically.
