About this tool

This is a clock-time calculator: it works with two times of day, like 9:00 AM and 5:30 PM, rather than two calendar dates. For the gap between two dates instead, see the Date Difference Calculator.

When the end time is earlier than the start time — like a 10 PM to 6 AM night shift — the calculator automatically treats it as spanning into the next day rather than producing a negative result, and shows a note confirming that assumption.

An optional break field subtracts unpaid time from the total, which is how most timesheets calculate actual hours worked. If a break longer than the total time span is entered, the calculator caps it and shows zero hours rather than a nonsensical negative result.

Frequently asked questions

If the end time is earlier in the day than the start time — like 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM — the calculator assumes the end time falls on the next day and calculates the span accordingly, noting this on the page.
