About this tool

Durations are converted to seconds, added or subtracted, then converted back, so values above 59 are fine: 90 minutes is treated as 1 hour 30 minutes. 1:45:30 + 2:30:45 = 4:16:15.

Results past 24 hours aren't wrapped around like a clock. 20 hours + 6 hours 30 minutes is shown as 26:30:00 in total hours and as 1 day 2 hours 30 minutes, so you can use whichever fits. Subtracting a longer duration from a shorter one gives a negative result, clearly marked.

In "time between" mode, an end time earlier than the start time is treated as the next day — 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours. Decimal hours (8.5 instead of 8:30) are handy for timesheets and invoices. For shift lengths with an unpaid break, the Hours Calculator is built for that.

Frequently asked questions

Enter each time in the hours, minutes and seconds boxes and choose "Add times". The calculator carries minutes into hours automatically, so 1:45 + 0:30 = 2:15.
