About this tool
URLs can only safely contain a limited set of characters. Spaces, symbols, and non-Latin characters need to be percent-encoded — represented as a % followed by two hex digits — so they can be included in a query string, path segment or form submission without breaking the URL.
This tool uses the browser's own encodeURIComponent and decodeURIComponent functions, which are UTF-8 safe, so accented letters and non-English text encode and decode correctly rather than turning into question marks or broken symbols.
If a decoded string contains an incomplete or invalid percent sequence, decoding fails, and the tool shows a clear error instead of returning corrupted text.
Frequently asked questions
Spaces aren't allowed unencoded in most parts of a URL, so they're represented by their percent-encoded byte value, %20, following the standard URI encoding rules.
